Abstract

The group Systems and Microsystems for Chemical Sensors (SMCS) works on the detection and recognition of chemical species, specifically gaseous species and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), by means of innovative gas sensor microsystems. These activities are associated with a large application field, for example: atmospheric pollution with CO, O3, NO2; industrial context with VOC such as benzene, toluene, xylenes; bioprocess environment with volatile fatty-acids. The finalized sensor structures reach real-time and selective detection of the target species with accuracies close to the standard parameters of metrology in the large range of concentrations (from few ppb to 100 ppm). Moreover, they present a low power consumption and maximal scale integration. This research program is strongly multidisciplinary and requires scientific skills in various disciplines such as organic and inorganic chemistry, molecular physics, physics and chemistry of materials, physisc and chemistry of gas/material interaction, atmospheric physical-chemistry, micro system gas sensor and electronic.

International and national projects

  • European Program COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) – Trans-disciplinary Action TD1105- European Network on New Sensing Technologies for Air Pollution Control and Environmental Sustainability. Within this trans-disciplinary COST Action, we are involved because of our scientific and technical skills on chemical gas sensors as well as organic and inorganic chemical filters to develop relevant devices for air quality control. Besides, two members of this team have been nominated as member and substitute of the management committee (2012-2016).
  • ANR CAPBTX: A Sensing composite structure-based Microsystem devoted to the selective measurement of benzene, toluene and xylenes (ANR Blanc project 2010 917 01; role: coordinator; 2010-2013).
  • ANR POLL CAP: Development of semiconductor gas sensor microsystems for the monitoring of atmospheric gaseous pollutants (ANR Blanc project; role: coordinator; 2006-2010).
